Well last year I attemped my first approach graft on my Trident Maple that was not budding out where I needed it to. Today I got an opportunity to inspect the graft and it looks like it was successful.

The last time I showed the tack the branch was much thinner. However over the year the branch has thinkened, and the graft has really healed.

Here is a close up after the tack was removed. Normally I would clip off the lead branch before the graft. However I think I’ll leave it on a little longer just to be sure that the graft is ready and strong enough to support the branch.

Here is the tree as it looks right after loosing its leaves for the year. I have some wiring to do, but the tree has filled in nicely.

It was cut down to a short trunk and allowed to bud out. Crepe myrtle had been shortened dramatically and repotted.

The graft were sealed with this paste

Mike Rogers and I grafted a dwarf crepe myrtle to a crepe myrtle. The branches of the dwarf crape myrtle were thread-grafted through the crepe myrtle.

The dwarf crepe myrtle is shown behind in the white pot.

This is the problem area. It is right above the cut at the stump. As you can see the branches above are starting to thicken the trunk, so this needs to be addressed now.

A small drill bit is used, just slightly bigger than the branch I will use for the graft.

I used a new shoot from an existing branch. This branch will be removed once the graft takes hold. Once the shoot was pushed through the hole, the area around the thread graft was sealed with grafting paste. This is the grafting paste that I use

Two more thread grafts will be done in this general area to help thicken the trunk. March 2004

It really started out with no potential as a bonsai as it was. However grafting changed all that. Apr 2002
