It has been just about two years that I tried an approach graft on my trident maple.  Well today as I was doing some repotting I looked at the graft and see that it was successful.

You can see at #1 the branch that was used for the graft.  Number 2 is the new branch.  You can see how much bigger it is than the original branch.  This shows that the branch has grafted to the cambium of the tree and is now sending food down to the roots.  The size difference is sure indictaion of a successful graft.  Section 1 has now been cut so the branch is own it’s own.

This photo was taken when the graft was first started.  You can see how clean the cut was before the cambium rolled over the graft.  Also the branch was the same thickness at both ends.

The tree has filled in and is full of flower buds. It still needs to develop quite a bit further but it has the basic structure. It also has become more compact and less leggy. So it is well on its way to becoming a very nice Shohin bonsai. Sept 2006

Well everyone has been patiently waiting to find out the results of the graft. I am happy to report that ALL grafts have taken and the tree is doing very well. As an added bonus the grafts took so well that both ends of the grafts are putting out leaves. This means that leaves are growing from where the graft went in (not always happens) and where the graft came out of the tree. I’m just going to let this one grow out this year and gain strength. This tree didn’t cooperate all that well this year. out of the three grafts that I tried only one took. The biggest challenges were the three hurricanes that hit Central Florida. This tree was moved so often and two of the grafts weren’t strong enough to take the handling. In any case you can see in the picture to the right where the thing twig goes in from the left and where the thick graft took at the right side. I will redo the other two grafts this winter. The paste that I used here is available at the Orlando Bonsai Store
