Once I got in there to take a look I found that there was a lot to remove. This is a soft wood so I tried to be careful and not expose the bare wood as much as possible. However these cuts were big so I had little choice.

This is the “after” picture that shows the carving done to give the trunk a much smoother look. A
grinding tool with a chainsaw type blade was used to do the carving.
After the carving the tree was root pruned and placed into a training pot. This pot gets used so often, and I think It only cost $2. The tree now has great taper and the start of a first branch. Feb 2004.

May 2003 tree was repotted into wider pot. Long crossing deadwood was shortened and carved.

The tree has extremely interesting deadwood. One coat of lime sulfur had been applied by this point.
