Collected Pond Cypress (February 14, 2002)                                             Orlando Bonsai Store

Can you spot the bonsai?

Here is the tree about 2 months after it was collected.   I set the pot in a tub of water to help promote root growth.

This doesn't work for very many types of trees, however pond (and Bald) cypress love it.

The initial styling took place in October 2003.

He suggested to style the tree like this.

Here is the Pond Cypress after a few months of growing.  It is really developing very well and putting out branches everywhere that is is supposed to.   Won't be long until this tree is something very special.  May 2004

Part of my philosophy is to see other people's collections and to get their input once in a while.  The first lowest branch on this tree has always bugged me.  It looked out of place and was way too thin.  I took the tree to a meeting last month and Mike Rogers pointed out that the branch should be removed all together so that the foliage would be more uniformed.  After a quick "snip" the branch was off and instant gratification.  It was an instantly better tree and has made this tree look so much better.  I still need to develop a better top, but this tree is well on it's way to be a finished tree.  I was hoping to submit this tree for Epcot, but with the poor top I need one more year.  June 2005

I am sad to report that this tree slowly died in July.  I have noticed a lot in nature this year that a lot of bald cypresses were dying as well.  Perhaps the hurricanes from the 2 previous years did some damage that the trees just could not recover from.  However this was one of my favorites and I am very sad to lose it.  July 2006

It's right here.  The front of the tree turned out to be facing away from the camera.  As you can see it was submerged under about a foot of 40 degree water.  When I finally got it free the tree only had a few fine roots left.  I wasn't sure if it was going to make it.

By The winter of 2002 the tree was strong enough to move into a training pot.  I had only wired out about 3 branches at this point.  The tree was trimmed through out the year to promote branches to bud out.  This was taken August 2003.

I took it to a Guy Guidry workshop for some advice.

Here we are right before the styling began

In December 2003 Mike Rogers and I repotted the tree, and styled it similar to Guy's drawing, but decided to move a few of the branches around.  Can't wait to see what this tree looks like this spring.

Well a couple of things happed here.  The tree was removed from the pot and then some large roots were removed.  By doing this I was able to move the tree to the right in the pot and center it better.  I also did some pruning and wiring of new branches.  This tree is finally how I want it to be, and will be looking great this year.  January 2005

Finally a decent picture of this tree.  I have been trying for the longest time to get a branch to cover the scar on the upper top of the trunk.  As you can see I pulled one from the top over to the left side and it hides it quite well.  Sept. 2005
