This year’s winter in Florida started very early and was very cold, but it didn’t seem to last that long. My trees started popping out new growth a few weeks ago and now they are well on their way to having full canopies of leaves. However this is no time to sit back and enjoy the trees because there is a lot of work to be done. In this video I talk about controlling the growth o fyour bonsai during the initial growth of the Spring season. You need to stay on top of your trees or you’ll lose a great opportunity to make the most of the fast growing period.

Hallway Nitch

The Bunjin cypress really needs a good trimming, however the light green against the dark brown gives a really nice Zen feel.

I really wish I could keep this tree in doors all the time. It just fits so well and looks great in that corner.

Probably the worst place to place a tree because the heat dries out the bonsai so quickly. However it looked good for the night.

Finally a decent picture of this tree. I have been trying for the longest time to get a branch to cover the scar on the upper top of the trunk. As you can see I pulled one from the top over to the left side and it hides it quite well. Sept. 2005

I am sad to report that this tree slowly died in July. I have noticed a lot in nature this year that a lot of bald cypresses were dying as well. Perhaps the hurricanes from the 2 previous years did some damage that the trees just could not recover from. However this was one of my favorites and I am very sad to lose it. July 2006

Part of my philosophy is to see other people’s collections and to get their input once in a while. The first lowest branch on this tree has always bugged me. It looked out of place and was way too thin. I took the tree to a meeting last month and Mike Rogers pointed out that the branch should be removed all together so that the foliage would be more uniformed. After a quick “snip” the branch was off and instant gratification. It was an instantly better tree and has made this tree look so much better. I still need to develop a better top, but this tree is well on it’s way to be a finished tree. I was hoping to submit this tree for Epcot, but with the poor top I need one more year. June 2005

Well a couple of things happed here. The tree was removed from the pot and then some large roots were removed. By doing this I was able to move the tree to the right in the pot and center it better. I also did some pruning and wiring of new branches. This tree is finally how I want it to be, and will be looking great this year. January 2005
